Well-organized leadership represents only part of what is required of a manager. Charisma and the ability to lead the way as a manager, to be a role model, isn't something that every manager automatically brings to the table, but it's nevertheless important for the success of the company. Systematic employee management creates orientation and conveys an attractive and comprehensible sense of purpose during everyday work. This strengthens the intrinsic motivation of employees to make their own contribution. Good leadership starts with trust and meaning and deals preferably with intentions instead of instructions. These classic leadership instruments are used for the precise implementation of goals: In addition to information, target agreement and delegation, these are control, feedback and the career path.

The path to becoming a good leader is successful if a few important rules are consistently practiced. Good communication is the be-all and end-all. In open dialog with employees, the manager communicates his or her expectations of the employees and responds accordingly to their concerns and suggestions.

Elements of a good leadership style

Mutual respect, honesty, and clear and empathetic communication are important elements of good leadership. If the leader perceives employees as equal colleagues and respects their wishes and concerns, he or she will receive respect. A good manager acts as a positive role model and works constantly on employee motivation to improve the corporate culture.

Regular constructive feedback and praise for achievements or solutions are an important part of motivating employees. Performance is often taken for granted and words of appreciation fall by the wayside. But good performance is not a matter of routine.

It is important to be fair to employees, both in terms of pay and in our dealings with each other. Special achievements deserve appropriate recognition: Tickets to an event or a dinner voucher are more personal than financial recognition. The manager is responsible for the positive results of the team and is therefore well advised to show personal appreciation for each employee.

A manager also earns respect and authority step by step through consistent action. This means strictly adhering to agreements, acting fairly and ensuring that each colleague bears the consequences for his or her actions. Once a mistake has been made, listening is an important quality to understand who was involved and in what way. In this way, the manager is in a position to determine the consequences fairly, to exclude unilateral action and to implement solutions that find acceptance.

Decisions must be made constantly in a managerial position. Credibility and authority are undermined if the executive has to revise decisions already made or repeatedly makes wrong decisions. Decisions must therefore be made in a well-founded manner. This takes time, as sufficient information must be gathered, and options weighed. Asking employees is an important tool for obtaining expert opinions, and it gives colleagues the feeling of being included.

The art of managing employees is to act successfully with respect, tolerance and in a spirit of togetherness. Having a sense of when collegial pats on the back are appropriate and when a strong demeanor is necessary. Experience and specific training in employee leadership are helpful in this respect.
